Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench - interview for KILKIM ŽAIBU 2016 festival:

I. T.: Hails! Let’s start with the question about this place of the world you’ve coming to play. As Pungent Stench and Church Of Pungent Stench you have already been in Baltics and not just once. Do you have some memories about these times and what do you expect from this gig now?

M.S.: Yes, I have been there and I was always treated like a royalty by the locals! Ok, maybe not exactly like a royalty, but still very good and naturally, we’re looking forward to visit Lithuania, soon! As always, I expect to meet an enthusiastic audience, who enjoys loud music and pools of alcohol! It’ll be our first time at Kilkim Žaibu Festival, but I’ve been told that it’s located close to a lovely lake, so I’ll definitely have to bring my speedos and diving glasses!

I.T.: Now here we are before the name “Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench”. Opening homepage there appears an angry letter to everybody where Mr. Stench threats to “burn the Church (already mentioned)”, and to destroy every plans of reforming Pungent Stench without him, but is doing nothing to create his own version of Pungent Stench. How can you explain this nowadays name of a band and introduce us in the situation telling what’s going on and why?

M.S.: There’s not much to tell – we had to change the name affix “The Church of” to something more explicit, as it wasn’t eligible to prevent people from mistaking us with the historical band “Pungent Stench”. Get it? “Schirenc plays...” should take care of this, though.

I.T.: Have there been some discussions about it? What can we expect from the project “Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench” as inheritor of Pungent Stench legacy? Are there some songs from the previous albums you are not allowed to play, or everything’s legal, free, available and possible?

M.S.: There has been way more than discussions, but I really don’t want to wash our dirty linen in public! However, I can tell you that I’m allowed to play whatever song I want, so all’s good!

I.T.: According to the situation I’ll ask even this stupid question about the recording of an album of such project – maybe in vain of “old songs in new sounding”, or even something new, Pungent-Stenchy based, what asks to be released, but is under question just because somebody has his rights to forbid anything such like? And – is there some other way to release something as members of Pungent Stench? After all this project is playing more or less since year 2013 and musicians are into Pungent Stench music just playing it on stage.

M.S.: Re-recording the albums is not something I’d like to do, because you can’t catch the spirit of these times, again. It might be played better and the production could improve, but where’s the charm and attitude? It’s not even necessary as a substitute for the sold out Pungent Stench albums, since these will all be available, again! Yep, the entire discography will be re-released on CD and vinyl, as well as digital download! I see “Schirenc plays Pungent Stench” as a live act, performing all these songs to complete the experience, rather than a sequel. Oh...and the lost studio album from 2007 will finally see it’s long overdue release, so there’s “new” material from Pungent Stench on the way, too!

I.T.: It is not a secret for every fan that lyrics that hides behind the music of Pungent Stench are about weird people with interesting way of thinking. How do you think are these characters are impressing you or not and can this be a possibility that someday you can become like one of them or even more, because all these personalities are living in your head? By the way – what appears first – music or lyrics, or idea grows from the both sides creating one complete unit?

M.S.: I’m not worried about my mental health being endangered by writing this type of lyrics. It’s a perfect way to get it out of your system, so it’s probably even therapeutic to some extent. The music always comes first and is the most important part for me, but lyrics can catch the general mood of the music. It’s not my favourite part of the writing process, but it has to be done and it can be very entertaining, every once in a while. It’s just that I usually start writing them a week or two, before we hit the studio and things can become a bit stressful, quite fast.

I.T.: Have there been some repressions to you or to some other member from the band or even whole band, because of ideas you are singing about or it is accepted as very normal expression of human society’s member? After all the content of Pungent Stench lyrics seems are about the normal men who are healthy and well and are just a bit too egoistic to hide all their mental abnormalities. We have not heard, but maybe you are more informed - has ever any fan made an excess and followed the way your lyrics has told him?

M.S.: It takes way more than song lyrics to make people commit atrocities, such as the ones we’re singing about. And I have never heard about a violent crime that was inspired by our poetic outpour. We did have problems with censorship in Germany and Australia, but that couldn’t stop us from playing and recording more music.

I.T.: Cannibalism. It appears in your music very often. Per example let’s take the first album’s “A Small Lunch” - Are you of these people who are ready to rationalize the cannibalism as the way the consumer society can go? Have you ever tried the human meat as a meal?

M.S.: I’ve eaten pussy and ass, but that probably doesn’t qualify for cannibalism, does it? Not sure what you meant, but I’m not seeing humans as a possible food source and neither do I see animals as one. However, I would eat a person, if my survival depended on it. Or maybe if they looked really, really tasty.

I.T.:Lithuania is a country where starts the movie history of fictional character Hannibal Lecter known as cannibal well played by Anthony Hopkins in “Silence of Lambs” and following movies about him. Has some theme of your lyrics been taken from real life events or are they just the product of your sick imagination and has the upper mentioned character or some else notorious maniac inspired making of them?

M.S.: I’m often inspired by real life events, but I enjoy portraying them from the evildoer’s perspective, therefore I have to spice up the story with my own imagination. But fiction such as movies and books has also giving me ideas for lyrics. I’m constantly getting showered with information and impressions, which might occasionally end up in a song lyric and it’s just a matter of what sticks with me.

I.T.: Besides the glorification of the dark side of human instincts and physiologic necessities what else must expect your listener knowing that the band with the name “Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench” are playing on stage?

M.S.: A shitload of sexiness, spread by three sweaty men in tight pants, of course!
